History of snusWhile the introduction of tobacco to the Europeans can be traced back to Christopher Columbus’ travels to the New World in 1492, tobacco its self didn’t arrive in Sweden until the 1600’s and it wasn’t in the form of snus, it was smoking tobacco. In the 1700’s, Nasal snuff was very popular with the Swedish but it wasn’t until late in the 1790’s that the Swedes began to develop the method of manufacturing what we now know as Swedish snus. The method of placing tobacco in the upper lip was created out of necessity. Back then, the majority of Swedish folks were farmers and the only ways tobacco could be used back then was smoked in a pipe, powdered and inhaled thru the nose or chewed in its leaf form. All three of these methods could be used when the farmers were at home but were not practical when they were working their fields. Swedish snus was made by local tobacco farmers back in the early 1800’s and was usually given to their neighbors and friends or traded for other goods. It wasn’t until 1822 when a tobacco farmer named Jakob Fredrik Ljunglöf perfected the snus making process which made his snus the most prized. A few years later, he acquired the widely used quality mark, Number One, as his own trademark and soon his brand of snus became known as Ettan which is Swedish for Number One. As Swedish snus became more and more popular in the country, a myriad of different brands flooded the Swedish market. In the early 1900’s, a monopoly was created to keep better control on the quantity of manufacturers as well as creating a quality control standard that all snus manufacturers had to follow. Today, Swedish snus users can be found in all countries in Scandinavia, Northern Europe, the U.S., Africa and some of Asia but the most users can be found in Sweden which has over one million snus users, half of them ex-smokers. There is a growing amount of female snus users which account for more than 10% of the total amount of snus users in Sweden. |
